Easier access to past claim information

Homeowners can now access more information about a property’s previous Earthquake Commission claims.

Previously, homeowners needed a deed of assignment from the former owner to get information about past claims on a property. This made it particularly difficult for prospective buyers to know whether a property they were looking to purchase had a claim history.

Obtaining a deed of assignment is still recommended, if possible, but the Government’s Earthquake Commission Amendment Act has been passed by Parliament which empowers EQC to share more information about previous claims on a home.
